The Quincy Public Library kicked off this year's "Big Read" community event Thursday at Clat Adams Park.
Readers were given free digital and print copies of "True Grit" by Charles Portis to begin reading.
"True Grit" readers will then discuss the book throughout September and October as part of a community wide book club.
Manager of Information Services at the Library Katie Crowsher says this event is to get people to dive into a book.
"This is to bring literacy back to the focus of American culture. Reading for pleasure, getting people involved."
Events throughout the fall season will include book discussions, guest speakers, musical performances and dancing.
