Presentation will be Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
Dr. David Wiemer, professor of chemistry at the University of Iowa will present, “Herbal Products: They’re Natural but Are They Safe?” Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m. on the John Wood Community College Campus at 48th and Harrison in Quincy. The presentation is being sponsored by the Mark Twain Section of the American Chemical Society and JWCC.
Herbal products have become big business and advertisers proclaim the benefits of natural remedies for illnesses, weight loss and smoking cessation. These products are commonly described as “all-natural” and draw on the common belief that if something is natural it must be safe. Wiemer will discuss whether or not the beliefs have any scientific basis. He will present examples of both the beneficial and harmful compounds found in nature.
Wiemer’s research includes isolation, characterization and synthesis of biologically active natural products and the field of chemical ecology. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Orr Auditorium in the lower level of the Heath Center on the Quincy campus. The public is invited free of charge.
