The Great River TEC program has been active since 1971
The Great River Teens Encounter Christ Program will kickoff its second annual fundraising campaign Sunday September 1st at Quincy University's Franciscan Retreat Center. The kickoff event will begin with Mass at 5:00. A short presentation and cookout for all in attendance will immediately follow the Mass. Anyone is welcome to attend.
A TEC weekend is a three day retreat centered on the Paschal Mystery, or the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The retreat is designed to allow young people to encounter Christ both during the retreat and afterwards within their everyday lives. 288 TEC weekends have been held over the last 42 years, allowing roughly 6,500 young people to encounter Christ through the TEC experience. In addition to the seven TEC weekends currently held each year, the Great River TEC program also hosts Quests, Re-Quests, and Mini-TECs for a total of fourteen retreats annually.
Funds raised through Great River TEC's first annual campaign allowed TEC to cut the attendance fees in half for youth attending their first TEC weekend. Fees were also reduced for youth and adults coming back to serve on TEC teams. Those attending a Quest retreat for the first time also saw a drop in fees from $45 to $35 per person. The immediate results of the decrease in attendance fees have been encouraging as TEC saw an increase of 9% in attendance over the last year. In addition to this, four of the last five TEC weekends have had at least twenty first time attendees while only four of the previous sixteen weekends hit that mark.
Great River TEC's second annual campaign aims to raise at least $30,000 in order to keep offering these retreats at an affordable price. The income from the current fee structure leaves the TEC program $15,000-$20,000 short of covering expenses in a given year. Great River TEC also strives to provide youth with opportunities to continue to grow in their spiritual lives outside of the various retreat weekends offered. This year, the TEC program is sponsoring a trip for up to 40 youth to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis. Funding for opportunities such as this trip is provided through the annual campaign.
