Team Quincy: Saving the local Democratic Party

The Adams County Democratic Party is dead. Not my words, but the words of the folks who intend to revive it by taking it over. Over the last two years, it has become readily apparent that the only folks politically active or motivated on the left side of the aisle in Adams County belong to The Union Difference. It looks as if they intend to take the next step and take over the party.

Read the whole thing but the last paragraph is the most important.

Union Letter

What a damning statement.

“The Adams County Democratic Party is basically non-existent. They have only 25% of the precincts filled with committeemen and have only had, as far as we know, 1 meeting.”

1 meeting and 25% of the precincts filled. The Republicans on the other hand have 66% of their precincts filled with committeemen. Admittedly not enough but quite a few when you consider what committemen do (which isn't much) and how many precincts there are (80). They also hold well-attended monthly meetings for anyone that wants to show up.

The irony in this letter is overwhelming. The letter starts with a call for second amendment rights and ends with a plea to support a political party that largely opposes second amendment rights.

That’s not even the main issue, though. Apparently, the unions are now considered grass roots. That’s news to me and contained within this letter is my major problem with unions. Not only do their dues-paying members have no say in who they support but now they are being actively recruited to run for elected office for the Democratic party? This is the most important thing that can be done with union dues?

That being said,  regardless of your political persuasion or whether you agree with the unions, you’ve got to admit, it’s not a bad idea. You get your positions filled and at least look like you have something going for you when you really don't.

Of course, this could have the opposite effect. Once everybody finds out that the Democratic party has been completely co-opted by the unions, they will really have a reason to stay away.

But let's be honest, the reason the local Democratic Party isn't motivated and managed to turn the Quincy City Council into a Republican super-majority has nothing to do with how many committeemen there are.

It's because of a complete lack of leadership from the top on down and a small group of individuals who think they will always be the king-makers even though they haven't done anything for years other than sit on boards and lobby the folks in Springfield.

Tick tock...2013 will be here before you know it.
