Strawman: Todd Akin-A Failure to Communicate

Strawman: Todd Akin-A Failure to Communicate

8 months, 4 weeks ago

I suppose we shouldn’t have been distracted by the comments recently made by Congressman Todd Akin (R) of Missouri.  He was doing what most all politicians have done—he put his foot so far into his  mouth that it came out of the backside of his trousers.  How anyone, in this gender sensitive climate, could make the comments he made be in his right mind?  Maybe he’s not…..

And I suppose we shouldn’t have been surprised at the reaction by the Republican Party—riding into the fray on their white horses calling for Akin to bail out of the race, fall on his sword and go the way of those Republicans who have said or done the incorrect thing.   The Republican Party, as we all know, is the first to tidy up after someone says or does something questionable.  They are, in their own minds, above reproach—hallowed be thy name—we won’t condone this kind of conduct.  And maybe they’re right in this case—or are they?

Todd Akin has served 12 years in Congress and to my knowledge has done OK.  Until now he’s flown under the radar.  He is, however, a Tea Party guy, which makes him less than desirable to most all those on the left and apparently to a number of those on the right.  Tea Party folks have no ethics, steal from the poor to give to the rich and think racially impure thoughts most every waking minute. The thought that someone of his ilk, who possesses such a demented view of rape, could be allowed to continue to be a member of Congress—is preposterous!!

And yes, Akin did the apology thing, made a new commercial,, made the talk show circuit and said he misspoke, but that wasn’t good enough.  That plan would have worked had Akin been a Democrat. But he’s not, so Todd take your family, your Master’s Degree in Divinity and solid record in Congress and jump off a bridge.  We’re the Republicans and you, Todd Akin, have been kicked out of the club, de-funded and tossed into moving traffic.   You’ve cost us the race against Claire McCaskill and we’ll make sure of it by totally turning our back on you.  So there!

Meanwhile, to the north, long time Congresswoman, Michele Bachmann is getting the same treatment from money guys on the right.  Monday night on “The Mark Levin Show”, Bachmann admitted that she is in a very tough race in Minnesota and is getting no support from the same folks who have tossed Akin under the bus.  No support from the RNC and none from the NRCC.  So Michele—you’re on your own—get ready for the private sector.

Don’t Akin’s comments just fit in with the nonsensical thought process that is Washington speak as we have come to know it?  Think about it; in the past 18 months the country’s credit rating has gone down, prices on EVERYTHING have gone up, the unemployment rate has stayed above 8% and the current administration ran over 2.5 million of your dollars in ADVERTISING to get more citizens to sign up for food stamps.  And we’re worried about Todd Akin?

For the past year I’ve indicated here that there’s little or no difference in the two parties and the treatment of Akin and Bachmann are just the latest examples.  The one difference, however, is that in times of need the Democrats circle the wagons and support their own—while the Republicans circle the firing squad around the accused.

Can we count on this group of Republicans to make the tough decisions and change the way this country operates in the months to come?

I have my doubts……...
