single people don't get those benefits ... that's not equal. This is only about the definition of marriage. The courts changed it, wrote law.

I think these are completely valid concerns and people on the pro-same-sex marriage side dismiss them too quickly. I wonder how courts will address them. If "marriage license" is part of a fundamental right, then they would apply strict scrutiny to equal protection analysis (To keep the discriminatory law, the government must show that the challenged classification serves a compelling state interest…

Illinois Approves "Sign and Drive" for Traffic Violations

Driver's License will no longer be taken for certain types of traffic offenses

From Associated Press:

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation ending the practice of posting a driver's license as security after certain types of traffic citations.

Quinn's office made the announcement late Saturday evening. The Chicago Democrat says the measure will help Illinois motorists hold onto a vital piece of identification and also allow law enforcement officials to do their jobs.

The legislation was sponsored by Democrats Sen. Michael Noland of Elgin and Rep. John D'Amico of Chicago.

It eliminates posting a driver's license as bail for certain traffic offenses. Instead, it allows drivers to sign a citation as their guarantee that they will appear in court or pay a fine.

The "Sign and Drive" legislation will take effect immediately with the governor's signature. The bill is SB2583.
