Say $100 million in taxpayer dollars shouldn't be used for Obama library (from pantagraph.com)
SPRINGFIELD — Two Central Illinois lawmakers say taxpayer dollars should not be used to build a presidential library for Barack Obama.
Republican state Reps. Bill Mitchell of Forsyth and Adam Brown of Champaign filed legislation this week that would reject a proposal endorsed by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, to spend $100 million in state construction money to help build the library in Chicago.
Mitchell said the state cannot afford such a move.
"How in the world could these Chicago politicians think it's a good idea to spend $100 million of public funds on the Obama Library? This is an outrageous waste of taxpayer dollars," Mitchell said in a prepared statement.
Brown said private funds should be used to build the library.
"President Obama has raised billions for his campaigns and we feel his foundation should raise the money needed to bring the Obama Library to Chicago. No taxpayer dollars should be used for this project," Brown noted in a statement issued Tuesday morning.
The legislation is House Resolution 1118.
