HAMILTON, Ill. – Hancock County State’s Attorney Jim Drozdz of Hamilton died early Sunday morning near Wildwood, Ga.
According to Hancock County Sheriff Scott Bentzinger, Drozdz was driving a semi-trailer truck near the Georgia-Tennesse border when his truck ran off the side of the road.
Bentzinger said he was contacted by the Georgia State Patrol through the Illinois State Police around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Georgia State Patrol reports the truck was at the eastbound entrance ramp to I-24 in Dade County.
“He was involved in a minor accident at slow speed with minimal damage,” Bentzinger said. “The trooper seemed to think he had suffered some kind of medical condition that caused him to pull off the road.”
An autopsy was to be held today in Atlanta, Ga. .
Hancock County Board chairman Cary Gray said he would look into the procedure for naming a successor to the state’s attorney position.
“I anticipate Assistant State’s Attorney Brian Hunter would cover the duties of the office until the county board makes an appointment,” Gray said.
