A source said the mine’s major customer, ADM, did not renew its contract

FARMERSVILLE — Macoupin County officials said Friday they are in the process of coming to the aid of 189 miners laid off with the closing of Crown III coal mine.
“What a terrible blow to the economic base of our economy. We are ready to work with any and everyone to see how we can get through this,” said Deanna Demuzio, the mayor of Carlinville.State Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, said he plans to meet soon with with Springfield Coal Co., the owners, to explore possibilities of developing more business. The company cited “poor market conditions” in a news release. Company representatives could not be reached Friday for comment.
A source said the mine’s major customer, Archer Daniels Midland of Decatur, did not renew its contract for next year.
Crown III was the last union mine left in Illinois, according to Tom Emery of Carlinville, a freelance writer who writes about mine history in the area.
