After a period of self-induced solitude, only the most radical, insane event could provoke the reappearance of columnist Coco Letterman. And…thanks to Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin…The Return of Coco Letterman.

Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot.

Let me set the stage…against a relatively moderate Democratic incumbent – vulnerable, no less, because of her support of President Obama and many of his policies – you, the weakest of the three main candidates, emerge from a bitter, three-way Republican primary to have the lead…the LEAD…over Claire McCaskill. President Obama is not going to get any more popular in Missouri than he is now – and that’s not much. All you have to do is run out the clock. Don’t. Screw. Up.

Instead, you go on a liberal-leaning local talk show with Charles Jaco, former Scud-Stud Wanna-Be from CNN and the 1991 Gulf War. Jaco, who makes no secret of his left-leaning politics, welcomes you on the show and begins a discussion of abortion rights. He asks you if you believe in abortion – even in the case of rape.

Obviously, he wants to trap me and get me in a gotcha-type of answer, you think. I just need to go over what my advisors and I have discussed, because surely we’ve had this conversation, right? Surely, with the Democrats attempting a “War on Women” this year, and with the president’s first attacks on the Romney/Ryan ticket being aimed at Romney’s pledge to remove funding from Planned Parenthood, surely you’ve had a conversation with your advisors prior to this interview, and you know this is a trap, right?

Surely, your answer is, “Charles, what we really should be talking about here is not a splinter issue on which I’ve made my position clear previously – what I can’t believe you and the rest of your liberal-leaning media brethren ignore is that we keep talking about what we would do with an unborn child if the rape victim became pregnant…that’s a possibility…when what we need to be talking about are ways to stop the rape that actually did occur to begin with. How can we best eliminate or crack down on these crimes against women?”

Nope. You instead claim that not all rapes are “legitimate,” and then you go on to say that women can magically power-down their reproductive systems if they sense they’re being raped.

Oh, and your opponent? A woman.

What kind of an idiot are you?
In one fell swoop, you’ve not only shot your own electoral chances in the foot with a cannon, but you single-handedly may have cost the Republicans the shot at the majority in the senate.

Whether you’re a quitter or not doesn’t matter right now, Todd. What matters is for you to practice what you preach. If you truly want the values you espouse to reign supreme, you need to do the right thing – get off the ticket and let someone who actually can win…win.
