Bud Martin to retire after two years on the job

The business manager for the Quincy Public School system is set to retire before the end of this school year after two years with the District.

Superintendent Lonny Lemon said they posted his position this morning and expect to have the spot filled no later than July 1.

Lemon said that Charles "Bud" Martin is "absolutely one of the best guys I have ever known in education. We will miss him dearly."

Lemon couldn't say when Martin's last day would be until they start interviewing candidates. The School Board hasn't met yet to discuss the issue, but Lemon said they likely will at the next meeting.

"We're leaving it open-ended right now," Martin said in regards to his last day. "I didn't want to leave the district in a bind. Whenever they find a replacement, we'll work on a transition time"

The Board unanimously approved the appointment of Martin as business manager in December 2009 effective for the 2010-2011 school to replace Rich Royalty.

Martin came out of retirement. He had served as interim superintendent for the Breese Elementary District in Breese, Illinois. He also served 20 years in Flora, Illinois in several administrative positions, including superintendent. Martin started out at $110,000 a year. Royalty was making $118,562.

Martin's two-year contract with the district ends in June. He informed Lemon after Christmas break of his plans to retire.

"I was a retired superintendent and I came here to fill a need they had," Martin said. "This is a good time to begin a transition as we'll start budget preparation in March and April for next year."
