Where in all of that do you see any cost savings? You still have the city paid and employed people with their pensions. On top of that. The police in general mAke more than firemen meaning you likely would increase payroll costs. You still have all the buildings and all the equipment. About the only obvious savings i see is not paying for fire men's meals

It appears the privatization plan isn't going far enough - the politicians would still have there hands in it which is why there are concerns about transparency and oversight. IL wouldn't grade out real well on these points either.

Maybe this time we can get the government of of this process and let the free market determine where we go from here. Government subsidies seem to the kiss of death of death for any of these projects. In my opinion government is filled with bureaucrats - by definition not people who are known for being innovative, forward thinking people - lean more towards the anal-retentive side of the scale.

You want a real radical idea, and utilize manpower correctly, get rid of the fire department, fold them into the police department, and call them Public Safety Officers. Have 1 or 2 super "fire" houses to keep the fire trucks. Cross train both agencies, and put them all in police cars. Leave drivers for each piece of fire equipment, and they would work the same shifts as the "police". Have enough fire…
