University of Illinois Extension Educator Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant says all small farmers need to tune in and weigh in on new food safety rules before they’re finalized.
A free webinar - presented by University of Illinois Extension, Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Illinois Farmers Market Association and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - will cover the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act on Thursday, October 3rd from three o’clock to 4:30 Central time.
Several topics - including an introduction to the Act and preparing for the Act with good agricultural practices and on-farm food safety plans - will be covered.
Wes King of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance says the Food Safety Modernization Act includes new regulations regarding the growing, harvesting, holding and transporting of produce - representing some big changes to the food system. King notes the FDA released draft-proposed rules governing the practices on produce farms and for facilities that process food at the beginning of the year that total well over one-thousand pages. He says the webinar will cover the basics of what the Act is and intends to do - as well as what it means for small farms and local food systems.
While the webinar is free - registration is required. To register by phone - call 217-782-4617. Online registration can be found at http://webs.extension.uiuc.edu/registration/?RegistrationID=8819.
